Artist Statement
My work is an attempt to physically formalise the epistemological divide between the logical world and the physical world. I hope that by creating something that is both visually engaging and functions in a rhythmic pattern, I can convince the viewer to engage with the art in a meditative sense.
Immanuel Kant describes an “A priori” (“from the former”) vs “a posteriori” (“in the aftermath”) dichotomy in knowledge, which I wish to exemplify with the physical fluid (a posteri) reacting to the magnetic forces, being run by the obfuscated gears (a priori).
I believe the things that we do as humans fall on a spectrum of “Art” (which I would like to define as “theoretical/ logical”) to “Science” (“experimental/ consistently repeatable”); So there is “art” in a doctor developing a new surgery technique, and there’s “science” in an artist perfecting their technical skill in painting. And everything all humans do fall somewhere along the spectrum, like carpentry being an art that’s slightly closer to the “Science” side vs theoretical physics, which is a Science I’d consider closer to the “Art” side due to its “theoretical” nature.
What I ultimately hope that people get out of my work is a sense of curiosity. I find that when people understand something more, they enjoy it more; in learning that exerting mental effort to try and understand something makes that thing more enjoyable, the idea of being open minded becomes less about simple tolerance and more something one becomes excited about.
